Brooklands, Maesycwmmer
A Victorian house in 1 acre with 5 bedrooms, large reception rooms, farmhouse kitchen, cellar, stable, garage. Sold for 5,500 in 1967 This was a magical house in our childhood. Acres of wood behind, the Brook running through a wild valley beside the house, the sunken tennis court (for croquet) in front of the house, a stable with a hayloft over. The house itself was full of treasures from Captain Watkin Lewis's travels, and had a cellar and odd rooms in odd corners. The kitchen was huge, with an enormous table, under which Captain (Gubby), the bull mastiff had a large mattress as his bed.

This photo must have been taken very soon after Lyn Thomas, Bette and Mary moved in after the death of David H Thomas. This would make it about 1939. The sunken area was always known as the tennis court although it was only used for croquet - but this is only photo showing it marked up for tennis. There are two figures on the back of the lawn - I think they are Lyn, sitting and Bette walking towards her, with her back to the camera. Am I being fanciful or is it a sad photo?

Brooklands on a spring day, as we remember it as children. The sunken area was known as the tennis court and was used for croquet. It was surrounded by huge purple rhododendrons To the right was the drive, and alongside it a paddock. To the left, in a deep gully, was the brook. Behind the house were the stables, with hayloft over, and a paved yard. Beyond was the garage and behind this several acres of wilderness. The house is still there, but the tennis court has been filled in and the house much altered, at least on the facade.
